DR ANNA KOTOVA
Lecturer in Criminology, University of Birmingham
My name is Dr Anna Kotova and I am a Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. I teach a range of modules around punishment, prisons, and crime.

I read for a BA in Law (Oriel College, University of Oxford), an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice (Green Templeton College, University of Oxford) and then a DPhil in Criminology (Oriel College, University of Oxford).

My research focuses broadly on punishment and its impact, with a specific focus on imprisonment. I began looking at the experiences of long-term prisoners’ partners, which developed into my PhD, funded by the Sir Halley Stewart Trust. A brief summary of this project can be found here:
This blog is primary for my reflections on teaching Criminology, the issues that arise when discussing contentious and charged prison-related topics in the classrooms, and for my reflections on the state of today’s prison system.
