IMPACT AND ENGAGEMENT
April 2018 - March 2019
BRITISH ACADEMY RISING STAR ENGAGEMENT AWARD
This engagement project was an extension of my doctoral work on the experiences of partners of long-term prisoners in the UK.

It comprised of two one-day symposiums. The first one took place in Birmingham in September 2018, and brought together senior and Early Career Academics working on the experiences of families affected by imprisonment. The aim was to discuss the challenges of impact and ensuring our research contributes to positive changes within policy and practice. We were fortunate to be joined by a number of organisations that work with families, including POPS, Children Heard and Seen, and others. We also heard from families themselves.

The second even was held in London, and the goal of this day was for the ECRs to meet with policymakers and campaigning organisations and build on the discussions that took place at the first event. We were joined by Lord Farmer, Baroness Helena Kennedy, and representatives of the Justice Committee. There were also immensely valuable contributions from The Howard League, Prison Reform Trust, Families Outside (Scotland) and the Scottish Children's Commissioner.

As a result of this project, we produced two main outputs. These were produced in collaboration with Dr Natalie Booth of De Montford University and Kirsty Deacon of Glasgow University.

1. Two infographic posters on the experiences of families and children, produced by artist and researcher, Pen Mendonca: [INSERT LINK]

2. A leaflet aimed at Early Career researchers on the topic of impact and engagement, with advice, lessons learned from the symposiums and useful links. See here.
